Javi Fuentes Bernal, D.E.S., MSW

Social worker

Javi Fuentes Bernal (they/them) is a social worker and community organizer. They hold a Master’s degree in Social Work and are a Vanier Scholar and Ph.D. candidate in Social Work at the Université de Montréal. Their doctoral research explores migration, gender affirmation and decolonial forms of knowledge among trans* Latin American migrants in Canada. Since 2022, Javi has provided mental-health counselling at Clinique Mauve and previously contributed to its clinical coordination. They also work as a consultant in gender, migration and mental health, serve on the Board of the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health (CPATH), and mentor researchers through the 2S/LGBTQ+ Health Hub. Their work combines community-based, intersectional and decolonial approaches with arts-based research and intervention to support trans and gender-diverse migrants.
